Indeed I do. I don't know whether there's just more soul in modern rock or if classic rock had a different type of soul, but to me modern rock outclasses classic rock 99% of the time.

It's hard to say:

If "soul" means that intangible quality of emotion, and thought, I would have to disagree. Modern Rock offers just as much as Classic Rock.

Classic Rock offers more "associations"; more nostalgia. Just hearing a favourite song can bring a person back in time to an event or memory. Maybe the quality of "soul" is a projection we, as listeners, bestow on songs. It could be a reciprocal relationship between artist and audience? We just need to give Modern Rock more time to fully make its impression on us.

I could say my opinion on the last few topics, yet I think I'd be labelled as ignorant. So I'll just pose it in the form of a question:

Can any fan of modern rock name a couple of bands, no, even songs which have a serious and/or artist emotional impact intended and are not just downright sappy. I can't. Although the arguement over wether sappy somgs which have a powerful effect are respectable or not is another issue requiring another thread.

I'm thinking that "honesty" is a quality of "soul". Nothing is more disappointing than a contrived, dishonest, sappy artistic offering. Possibly the product of commercialism. Possibly just a gap in understanding... Possibly, Three chords but no truth...

The Tragically Hip song--"38 Years Old" is an honest emotional expression of sadness and loss; and it has just as much "soul" as classic rock. Whenever, I listen to this song, I'm "right there" in the imagery--in the kitchen, and passing in front of the house. I can feel the emotional message...

I am an avid listener of classic rock. My classic rock extends beyond just model classics like Zepplin, the Rolling Stones, KISS, or GnR. Such as the Eagles, the Guess Who, Cream, anything really with an intresting or unique sound in some way. These badns are classic because they made their own impressions on music. The Eagles were one of the first country-rock bands. People who enjoy country listen to them, and so do classic rock-ists.

Newer music doesn't neccesarily lack soul, it's just not different. I don't mean different like rap, or hip-hop(rap with actual music... somewhat). I do listen to some newer bands, but most of them only have a few songs I like. One of the most prominent newer bands that I enjoy listening to is Bowling For Soup. They're from Texas, and really represent your average joe's. They're music is honest, from them, and though influenced (they've actually been compared to Motley Crue, which I don't neccesarily agree with) but the music is a style of it's own.

Classic rock has won me over, but not all new music lacks the soul, and the individuality that needs to be there.

I'm a 16 year old, play bass and guitar, listens to everything from the Eagles, to Metallica, to James Taylor. Music that has soul for you is really what you like, but anymore, new music is just the same, not written by the people (Bowling For Soup writes their own songs ) but by song writers who also write for other artists, thus making even more the same. It does lack soul, it is not the individuals music anymore.

The Manic Street Preachers, Ryan Adams, Bloc Party, Biffy Clyro, At The Drive-In... those are just the first ones that came into my head. However, the last sentence confused me - are you saying that classic rock is respectable and emotional and serious whereas modern rock is not? That's the impression I'm getting.

Well the first part of my message was me staing in the form of a question the fact that I think nearly all modern rock music is sappy and drama-queen emotional.

The last sentance was saying that I'm not neccessarily saying that sappy music can't be good, I haven't thought about that yet.
