The most important thing I was ever told: "Have fun".

Read a post where a GN member told a new guitar player that. That's what we should all remind each other when it gets tough while learning new songs, chord progressions, skills...

Totally agree with everything here. I'm actually a bit new with the guitar, playing only several months now :D
I'm sure someone already said it here before- but don’t forget to have fun and remember- you learn from your mistakes!

- No matter how long you're playing- You'll always have something new to learn
- You'll never meet a guitarist that will admit he's a great one, even if it's Jimi Hendrix

My ex-teacher was very arrogant and thought he was awesome :P Trust me there are those out there, I feel Malmsteen also thinks he is amazing.

Exactly! I was practicing the other day and my wife came home, and said "When are you gonna learn that? You've been preacticing every day for almost a year, you would think you would learn by now." I couldn't believe it. I told her there's always something new to learn, even if you"ve been playing for 20 years. Besides, I'm not learning to conquer the guitar, I'm learning because I enjoy making music!

I get that also... "Havent you learned to play yet?" Well when I hear that theres a point when you say... "I have learned to play" then I can give her a idea on when....

i got frustrated with my improvisation progress, because i had run out of ideas. this left me with no one to blame or look to. i spent a long time plugging at it, seemingly getting nowhere, but when i heard a recording of myself, i had made a great deal of progress in areas i hadn't previously noticed, such as fluidity and tone. this taught me that you are always making progress when you're playing, whether you realize it or not.
this is all just dreck.

This was kind of touched on, but I'd like to elaborate. Find a suitable teacher that fits your needs. When I first started playing guitar I had millions of questions and ended up reading and learning theory almost exclusively on my own. We all had different needs when we first started playing. Finding a teacher that is willing to "morph" their knowledge into a format that inspires their students is priceless.

Yeah buddy. Don't forget to learn from your ears as well! I would have never have picked up a guitar if I wouldn't have had guitar heroes to begin with. Listen to as much music as you can in a lifetime!

Nothing is original, all that is old will be new again and someone will always be better.
The worst musicians to play with are the ones who feel they have to prove they belong in the room.
You sound better than you think you do... until you think you sound awesome -
listen to your recorded self often.
If you can't do it, cheat.
If only for a moment, your favorite guitar player sucked worse than you do now and still does from time to time.

If every group you play with break -up because of some nimrod, you are probably the nimrod and you need to be more humble or become a better guitar player. Groups will overlook playing for a guy who is great to be around and they'll put up with the antics of a virtuoso for a long time, but not a lack of both qualities.

I've had a serious series of bad days, for a number of reasons. I was kind of in a funk today. But I spent the early afternoon playing with a Jr High school jazz band, and the clouds lifted.

What I learned today (again): music heals. There are no bad days when you do what you love.

I know the feeling. I think your example is especially appropriate when it comes to writing music. I've hit the proverbial wall on many an occasion and sometimes you have to step away and come back to it to regain your inspiration.
