new uke/ I joined a uke band

Post by dogbite » March 16th, 2011, 6:50 am

I have some fun news. I joined a ukulele band.
last week I went to the town's art center for a party. the entertainment was varied; from a comic, poetry reader, an old mans chorus. the highlight was a uke band.
when I read the program I thought I would see a couple of young post hippie people playing 30's radio music ( which would be fine), but much to surprise, in walked 35 uke players of all ages.
they played the usual numbers, the last song, which started with the familiar chords, Am, G, F; I thought 'how cool, they'll play All Along the Watchtower...but no...they played Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear the Reaper'.
how fun.
after the show I talked to the lead guy and he invited me to their next rehearsal. that was last night. they asked me to join and I did.
the group is made up of old hands through beginners. I think the oldest might be in their 70's and the youngest about 10 years old. there are quite a few really nice instruments.
I went out and bought a new uke. it is a tenor Oscar Schmidt (Washburn) in mahogany. it plays and sounds nice. it is a step up from my 1950 era soprano uke.
they gave me an assignment; come up with a new song. this morning I was noodleing and stumbled on Hotel California. maybe that'll work for them.
here is a pic of my new uke. and also a link to the Cheezland Uke Bands recent performance.
the Blue Oyster Cult song comes in around 10minutes.

Ha, that's great, db. Congrats.
They've got a few videos up. They play all sorts of cool stuff.
Congrats, too, on the new axe.

the cool thing about ukulele bands is that they like the traditional uke music...old standards...easy to play...everybody knows the words. but uke bands love to play rock songs. it is so unexpected that it works. the London Ukulele Orchestra plays Pink Floyd and Deep Purple.
I am going to have some fun.

Very cool man! And you can't go wrong with Oscar Schmidt! I had one for a while, and loved it!

I was surprised and impressed when i checked out their web site. nice variety, style, quality, cool woods, without an astronomical price. I always thought they were beginner only makers. no craftsman thinking in the build. I paid a hundred and got a nice instrument.
yeah, the tuners are smooth. much better than on my old uke. the tuning ratio is good, as it does not take much to raise or lower when tuning up. I have a feeling that my strats tuners would be too much.

Sounds like great fun! That's the way to do it, money for nothing and get your picks for free. I see - all in the fingers?

Sorry, I had to say something different - let everyone else make sense. But... good for you!!! :D

Sounds like great fun. For my birthday last month I bought 6 soprano ukes for the family. Lower quality than the OS's but all playable. We will be trying to work up some group songs later.

Rock on dude.
