Anyone play it straight... no pedals.

Back in the day there were no pedals. They just had their amps to make their sounds.

Anyone do that now?

Yes! Well, it's a modelling amp... but I do most often play with just reverb on, which is onboard on loads of early tube amps too.

But my main reason for replying is to bring you this Wilko Johnson quote: "Pedals? I'm a guitarist not a cyclist."

Back in the day they didn't even have their own amps - I have a friend who toured with Roy Orbison in the 60s... they'd show up for a gig with just their guitars, and plug into whatever the promoter had on stage. In and out, no sound checks or anything....

Most jazz guys can go a whole career without ever having the need to think of pedals. Although pedals were around in the 60s the amount of pedals most guitarists had on the floor was absolutely minimal compared to today. Hendrix would often gig with just a fuzz pedal and a wah.

I like rolling my '59 Bassman that way with the Moondawgs. For the cover band gigs, you'd be surprised at how often none of the pedals are in use.

Interesting question.

I had this fancy pedal with many different settings for sound. I'm not "The Edge" and I found it was slowing my learning progress, so I sold it and I stick to a good amp (or good for me: a Fender HotRod) so no pedals other than a tuner for me. Now I feel that being "pure" allows me to really focus on the music (I'm trying to make) rather than fiddling with technology. :)

I don't use pedals anymore but my Vox is a modeling amp. I use to use a wah pedal a lot but it's now sitting on a shelf somewhere.
