Year 10 Week 5 Black Friday

The Sunday Songwriters club is a stretching exercise for your mind. Arpeggios for the brain cells, so to speak. After all, writing is like playing - to get better, you have to practice.

Had ourselves a mighty good time

Heading down to the parking lot
Where all the people are standing in line
Will you get yours before I get mine on

And a Blue Ray to replace his old DVD

And at Wal Mart it won't cost all that much on

And Daddy says he needs some new BVDs
All I ask is a little Peace on Earth
I wonder what that will be worth on

Celt, you've set the bar pretty high for this week's exercise. I love the lyrics and you really captured John Prine's style.

Absolutely delightful. :D

Don't know John Prine, so clearly I need to remedy that omission soon.

Cheers,

Chris

Might I recommend "He forgot that it was Sunday", "In Spite of Ourselves" "Dear Abby" "Please don't bury me"

Thank You All

It feels good to be writing again.

Cris,

Great suggestions from Nick. I would add "Sam Stone" and "Christmas in Prison"

And by the way John, great song. I'd think about changing up the chorus a bit to give it more of a punch, just the music, not the lyrics.

Thanks for posting those suggestions Nick and John.

I had an enjoyable half hour earlier working through some of his songs on Youtube. Interesting guy to try and copy too. Most of the songs I looked at had pretty straightforward chords, which even I was able to play along with. The requirements often seemed to be a not uncommon country mix of struggle against the odds, with good dash of pathos and humour, plus the odd splash of the bawdy, etc. I dug around and found some old lyrics that I wrote a while back and played them to some Prine-like chords and rhythms and it seemed to work pretty well. Count me in as a new fan of his songwriting. :)

Cheers,

Chris
