There was a number one hit in the 70's (Johnny Remember Me by John Leyton). The echo/reverb was created by playing the track through a speaker into a metal water tank that had a mic pointing into it.

If you listen to Seaside Rendevouz by Queen, Freddie's vocals has an old time radio sound. How did they do this? They recorded his vocal then they played it out of a speaker which was sitting in a metal can, they then recorded the sound coming out of the can Now they would just use an FX processor on Cubase/Pro-Tools.

It was actually much earlier than that - 1961 to be precise. One of Joe Meek's productions. The song - and how it was made - are featured in the Film "Telstar - The Joe Meek Story," which comes highly recommended by me. Interesting to hear the names of some of the musicians who worked with Joe .... the most famous one would be a certain Richie Blackmore!
