Re: New song for intermediates

On the Home Page, there's a box on the top right of the page - it's got a picture of Elvis.

"Details" underneath the "Your e-mail" prompt

On the next page, above the words "Sign Up" you'll see a link to "Archives" - clickety click and there you are, in all their glory.

Re: Rules for lyrics?

Hi, hfairfax, and welcome to Guitar Noise, No - there are no rules that say the chorus has to use exactly the same words each time. Check out some of the lyrics posted in the Songwriting Forum pages here - sometimes contributors use a repeated chorus and sometimes not. Also, check out Songwriting fo...

Re: Browsing the MP3s

I guess it could be something to do with the transmission - they sound fine on a CD through headphones (yeah, I know, talk about pretentious, listening to myself through cans). Toothbrush was how I got back into writing, and the credit for my doing so belongs to Nick, Ryan Spencer and particularly L...

Re: anyone in central Florida??

Honestly, Portia, such modesty.

Saying you "write songs and sing" is a bit like saying

"Hendrix played guitar", or "Beethoven wrote tunes"

You should have no problem getting personnel.

Re: Official Fan Clubs

I think you'll find the Internet is now the way bands distribute the same info that a fan club used to do for them - but it's now done from an e-mail newsletter out of an official web presence and it doesn't normally cost the member to belong. At the same time, the number of unofficial appreciation ...

Re: How to make lyrics "vague"

Hi, pk,

I know the feeling - I can't write abstract either.

A story in a song is not really a problem, so long as you concentrate on just three or four key points. If you go on too long with the and-then-and-then-and-then the listener is going to get bored.

Re: singing

That's OK - I sound dreadful, too, but it doesn't stop me.

A few lessons from a decent teacher wouldn't do you any harm. Ask down at your local music shop - they'll probably have a list of tutors they can put you in touch with.

Best,

Alan

Re: what to do after high school?

I have a fairly well-paid job, so there's next to no job satisfaction - I take the view that the less than exciting job pays enough to allow me to do what I enjoy and that makes my guitar and my social life all that more enjoyable.

Re: Ok to busk?

Hiya, Some elements of Scottish Law are different to English, but I think you'll find that Buskers are included in the same legislation as beggars. Technically, it's not legal unless you have a licence from the local authority; but I doubt if anyone from the local authority would know what that lice...

Re: How good do I have to be........

When Sid Vicious joined The Sex Pistols he'd never even picked up a Bass, let alone knew how to play it.

However, I suggest that you get your head around the basics at the very least - some chords, and be able to switch between them smoothly.

Best,

Re: Starting out at the beginning

Hi, Lara,

If you can play a number of chords and can switch between them fairly smoothly, then I would say go for it.

Playing in a  band with others is huge fun, and teaches you a lot. Enjoy it.

Best,

Alan

Re: Crowd-pleaser songs...

I would add:

Queen - Tie Your Mother Down - built for the stage, it has a solid riff, half a dozen chords, and a solo and it rocks along like no other.
