Tests of new recording rig

So I've finally finished setting up a humble recording studio in my dorm room. The setup is Shure SM 57 -->Peavey PV6 mixer -->Emu 0202 USB interface -->Thinkpad laptop. These two were recorded in Cubase LE and converted to mp3 in RazorLame: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=725941...

Re: Singing too high?

I listened to a bit of both those songs, and I think your range is just fine for them. However, you are singing very much from the throat instead of from the chest. It sounds very nasal, and this may just be your voice, but it might also be technique. The original vocal in Wonderwall is a bit nasal,...

Re: USB mixer or mixer+sound card?

I ended up going for the Peavey PV6 mixer and the emu 0202 for a total cost of $200. I have the Peavey sitting on my table right now, and it looks a lot more solid than the Xenyx. It's only $30 more than it's corresponding Xenyx model, and it has 4 mic preamps instead of two and an on-off switch. I'...

SM 57 vs. audix i5

I asked for an SM 57 at Guitar Center today and the guy recommended the audix i5 instead. I would have been more skeptical if they weren't the exact same price. Anyone have experience with both? The audix seems highly well reviewed online. I'm going to be using it as an all purpose mic: vocals, acou...

Re: USB mixer or mixer+sound card?

It looks like I'm buying the Behringer Xenyx 802, and the emu 0202 usb 2.0 interface: http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=610&subcategory=611&product=15186 (manufacturer's page) http://gearscore.com/b/boxx/knowledgebase.asp?iid=104&Cat=11 (a review) The emu is well reviewed, low-cost ($...

Re: USB mixer or mixer+sound card?

I forgot to include this in my original post, but I intend to do most of my guitar practice in a different room than my computer, so I would like something that has the option of AC instead of usb power. Do you think something like the Tapco, Toneport, or the various M-Audio interfaces could be powe...

Re: USB mixer or mixer+sound card?

Thanks for the advice Hueseph. The thing is that since I am generally going to be the only one playing on my recordings, a two track limitation is not too much of a problem for me. Also, I'm not too excited about prospect of installing additional hardware in my laptop. The reason I am looking into a...

USB mixer or mixer+sound card?

Hi there, I'm looking to record acoustic and electric guitars and vocals onto my Thinkpad T43 laptop, which does not have a line in jack. Rather than getting a USB interface, which has to be connected to the computer to work, I was thinking of getting an outlet-powered mixer which I could use for ot...

I'm a little confused here, and have been having a hard time finding information on this amp online. How many different kinds of preamp tubes are in this amp? I assumed there were just several 12AX7 tubes in there of the same make and model. If they are nominally identical tubes, how can you do anyt...

The three indicates a triplet. That is, three sixteenth notes bracketed together with a 3 last for .5 beats instead of .75 beats. It shortens the note value.

New amp! and shipping question.

Pictures coming soon, but I just got back home from a guy I found on craigslist who recently purchased this behemoth of an amp: http://www.mesaboogie.com/Product_Info/stiletto/ACE/stilettoACE.htm In order to pay for said behemoth, he was selling his impeccably maintained, never-gigged, recently retu...

Condenser mics

Hey all, After a bit of research, I am down to the following two microphones, both condenser mikes that connect to a powered usb port, containing onboard preamp and A/D converters: Samson CO3 (list price ~$200, $70 on Sweetwater.com): http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C03usb/ Blue Snowball (lis...

usb microphone?

Anyone have experience with microphones that can plug directly into a usb port, such as this painfully cheap offering from Nady? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nady-USB24M-USB-microphone?sku=272015 Or this more expensive one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-.006-USB-Powered-Conden...
