Re: Advice for someone missing fingers

Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Phil Keaggy immediately came to mind as guitarists working around hand injuries. I also found out that Jerry Garcia was missing part of his right middle finger as the result of a childhood accident. Taylor Guitars had an ad in the past couple of years about a man who l...

Re: Hello from chilly NH

Welcome to GN, "neighbor." (My family is originally from MA, but all but two of my siblings are now in NH. I'm the only one in Maine.)

Have fun getting back into guitar. 8)

Re: slide guitar, extension nut question

Update: I got the Stew-Mac nut, and it seems to work pretty well. It's wider than the Squier's nut, and also creates a little more spacing between the strings when the strings are tightened into the slots on the steel nut, but so far, so good. 8)

Re: slide guitar, extension nut question

Stewart-MacDonald has one that's a little lower price than the Grover. I might get one for the Squier Bullet Special that I just recently tuned into Open E. This one got pretty good reviews from Stew-Mac customers: < http://www.stewmac.com/Materials_and_Supplies/Nuts_and_Saddles/Slide_Guitar_Extensi...

Re: Guitar Pickup Resistance

I know it's an old post, but I just saw it and realized no one had replied. (I was doing a search to find the most recent thread or threads about lap steel, and this one popped up.) If you can't pull the pickup out and measure it without anything else in series between the pup and the meter, you can...

I got a charvel soloist for 350 off a stupid deal of the day "SDOD" sounds like you bought from a certain big vendor with the initials "MF." (I'm not advertising for them...

Re: Tube Amp

is it possible to install the power tubes incorrectly, yet still produce sound? idk Aren't tubes indexed to the sockets so you can't install them incorrectly? Maybe a tab on the the cathode so the tube can only be inserted one way? I think if somehow you were able to insert them so the pins weren't...

Re: Talk me into (or out of) this

Welcome to GN. There's lots of good learning stuff here. I hadn't been on here for awhile, but your reply got me back looking over some things (Travis picking, etc.), so thanks for that. I say go for. I've been wanting to start something similar. My idea to do something through Adult & Community Edu...

Re: D Chord GRRR....

It takes time. Maybe try some exercises going back and forth from D to A to E. (I use the chorus for Stephen Stills' "Change Partners." That's a slow rock tempo, different from the rest of the song.) Keep your first finger on the third string, and just move the other two fingers. This won't help you...

Re: Talk me into (or out of) this

Thanks, Alan. Yep, I may not have much to teach 'em, so it's mostly about getting folks together in one spot for some fun. (And using the music room at the school is mostly so I don't have to clean up my living room or basement to have a group come over and play. ) But I'm sure I'll learn some...

Re: Talk me into (or out of) this

Update: It looks like it's gonna happen. The instructor who usually teaches guitar courses for Adult Ed is unavailable, so we're going to try my idea for three weeks. I'm still waiting to hear from the A&CE office about when it'll start, and on what night of the week it'll be. This is kinda scary, a...

Re: D Chord GRRR....

David, you are a Jedi Master of guitar instruction. With your permission, I'd like to quote that second paragraph on one of my handouts for the Acoustic Jam Sessions course that I'll be "facilitating/organizing" with the local Adult Education office this fall. And I'll be taking that last sentence t...

Re: How to learn Harmonica

If I'd waited one more day, it would be four years since the last post here. But because I learned some things from this thread, I think it was well worth resurrecting it. So, who's still playing harp, who's recently added harp to their repertoire, or who's just thinking about learning har...

Re: Talk me into (or out of) this

Thanks for the input, Paul. I like the "intern program" description. Yeah, it's kind of a "networking thing," satisfying my curiosity about who's buying the other two copies of Acoustic Guitar Magazine at the local supermarket. I know there have to be other players out there, maybe now I can find ou...
