Re: Ear vs Eyes

Oh, please. The tastes of the "niche music" lovers I personally know run the gamut. REM fans who think they sold out sometime around the release of "Green," let's say, are not niche fans. That phenomenon is a whole different discussion, maybe an interesting one -- but it has nothing to do with clas...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

[Oops, here's a fourth point: Popularity is not a gauge of quality. Well , if it's popular that means a lot of people like it . Niche music lovers always hate anything that becomes popular . " I used to like (insert performer's name here) but they sold out !" Complexity also has nothing to do with ...

Re: First Electric

Consider getting a used electric guitar to begin with . You can get a good playing used model with a few nicks and dings for half the cost of a new one . If you have a friend who is a more experienced player , have your friend help you make the decision . If you ever get to the point where you feel ...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

I went back to the original post to see what was actually being discussed in this thread . It was about two guitarists , one who could read music but not play by ear and the other one who could play by ear but could not read . It has since turned into a discussion of classical composition compared t...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

I think most would agree that having both capabilities would make for a more well-rounded musician . Although my sight reading is poor , I believe knowing more about music theory will make you better equipped to play difficult pieces . The problem I had when I started playing , 45 years ago , was th...

Re: Ear vs Eyes

I think that there would be a lot of situations where a musician who can't play by ear would find himself at a loss while the " strictly by ear " player would feel right at home . Impromptu jam sessions , dark places where it would be impossible to read notes off a page , stages where you might want...

Re: Strings for a Les Paul

Many years ago I tried Gibson , Fender , D'Addario , and finally , Ernie Ball . For me the Ernie Balls worked the best . They sounded better , lasted longer and were cheaper to boot . I use Super Slinkys ( .009 to .042 ) .

P.S. I use them on a Les Paul !

I'm just curious , why would you want to do such a thing ? If you need it strung higher , buy a capo .

Re: Beginners Songs

Hi, I am a beginner at learning the guitar. I can't afford lessons so I have been learning through books. I have learned the chords of A, D, D7, E, G, & G7. Are there any other beginner chords that I can learn to play to help me with actually playing songs. I am getting bored just repititiously pla...

Re: Help needed! Which guitar is this?? Custom Gibson??

I am merely giving counterpoint to a statement of opinion with my own statement of opinion . If looks didn't matter at all we would all buy old , seasoned , well played guitars without any finish left on them . They sound better after all . I don't think I was particularly nasty in stating my opinio...

Re: Help needed! Which guitar is this?? Custom Gibson??

Could be any one of a bunch; but don't buy on looks, buy on sound and feel. This is not an answer to the question and besides , if I'm buying a guitar I am very concerned with the way it looks and so , I bet , are you if you were the one buying a guitar . If you don't have an answer to a post consi...

Re: The difference between a guitar player and a musician.

There is no difference . A guitarist plays notes on a guitar that is intonated , hopefully , to coincide with the notes that western music is composed of . Whether played badly or brilliantly it's still music . And that makes him a musician . I think shredding is like any other set of notes that you...

Re: Do you hear yourselves singing, what to do?

Keep singing , that's what ! The more you sing , the better you will be at it . You need to develop confidence that you're going to sing the right note when you get to it . Back in junior high school our chorus teacher would start every class by playing the major scale and then have us sing it .(Do ...

Re: Hey Joe

I agree with boxboy . VERY nice for six months but your timing messes up each time you switch from the chords to riffs .Try playing along with the record or a drum track . Cheap electronic keyboards have drum patterns you can play with if you have access to one . You need to strengthen your feel for...
