Re: Lessons to jam not to become a musician

I also agee with the "practice makes permanent". I started out teaching myself and it took forever for me to re-learn things from bad habits. As someone who is mostly self-taught, I can relate to that. I developed a few bad habits in the beginning. But the best way I found to overcome the...

Re: show last night

When I mess up, I pretend like I meant to do it. You know, to get that cool muted string sound for artistic effect. Ah, you wouldn't understand it, it's kinda deep.

Re: Learning/Remembering New songs

Yeah, I don't think it's absolutely necessary to know every song you learn cold and be able to play it on command. But I do think there's something to be said for building your base repertoire so that you'll never be at a "loss for words" when someone sees you with a guitar and wants to hear a littl...

Re: Recommended books

Two more suggestions to add to the list above. For learning music theory in general in a dead-simple easy to understand manner, including how to be more impactful with your songwriting, I would recommend a book called "How music really works". It's quite large however. For an explanation on how the ...

Re: Ohhh... this small hands.. *sigh...

The problem definitely isn't small hands as this video of little North Korean guitarists proves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtjvVgNMPtI If those kids can do it with a guitar thats almost the size of their own body, anyone can develop the ability to get a little more stretch from their hands. Also...

Re: finger bending exercises

i havent come across that situation either, but if i understand what your saying correctly, then could you not tap the the note with your picking hand? might not sound anywhere near the same, and would not work on an acoustic, but it is the only way i could possibly bend a string and then still pla...

Re: 2nd Set let down?

Could it be that your blood sugar is dropping and you just need a bite to eat? Sometimes I get that when I'm working and I'll notice my focus start to break. Some food fixes that.

How long does it take to develop that talent? I'd like to give it a go as well. :D

Re: Improving Playing Speed

I find that by doing 2 minutes on and 2 minutes off, I learn it faster than if I kept playing. The teacher who showed me this said in the two minute rest period, your muscles are actually digesting what you have just taught them. I don't know the science behind it, but it works for me. My teacher s...

Re: finger bending exercises

Hmm..

When I have trouble doing anything, I just turn that into an exercise. So in this case one way would be to just bend all over the fretboard with just your middle finger. Or alternate between all four fingers so you don't tire out as quickly.

Re: A great day for my son and me.

Yea, that's truly a sweet moment. To see your son take after his dad. Plus, knowing it could be the start of something great one day. I too wish my parents had encouraged me early on like that. But luckily I found guitar on my own. :-)

Re: Lessons to jam not to become a musician

I am a programmer and find new programming language easier than learning a new combination of chords switch. I'm a software engineer too and I've never really had any difficulty learning a new programming language or math or physics or anything like that. But learning to play the guitar is ...
