Re: Do the Pros care what name is on the head stock?

...I prefer musicians who can read music, even if none is necessary for the music we are playing. People who read music generally speak the same language and can communicate with each other more efficiently and precisely. That's my preference as well, and for the same reasons. Presently I'm playing...

Re: Do the Pros care what name is on the head stock?

In an ideal world, every bandleader would be as wise and enlightened as Notes. I'm guessing that the pro-gear question is easier for those of us who primarily play bass, because there are about 1,000 guitar players out there for every capable and available bassist. Ads for bass players seem less oft...

Re: Do the Pros care what name is on the head stock?

NoteBoat nailed it. If I were selling myself as a pro, I would have to shelve my Kramer aluminum-neck bass and my Kalamazoo solid-body six-string, and get myself more respectable gear -- P bass, J bass, something Les Paulish, a proper Strat, all the fashionable stomp-boxes -- anything necessary to p...

Re: Acoustic/electric

If you're playing live and loud, an A/E may be necessary. Under those circumstances I'd opt for a clean sound from a true electric rather than a tweezy, fake-sounding A/E. But I'm not normal. My electrics are set up like my acoustic, with .012s and higher-than-usual action, and I keep my amps prett...

Re: Acoustic/electric

I will offer Takamine as a brand that makes decent acoustics with good electronics. I've bought a 6- and a 12-string and they both played well. If my state passed a law REQUIRING me to own an acoustic/electric... I'd probably start by looking at Takamines. Because their guitars sound good acoustica...

Re: Acoustic/electric

I have never heard a prefab "acoustic/electric" that sounded good. The best results I've had personally involved an inexpensive lavalier mic clipped to a brace inside my little plywood Yamaha acoustic. It ran into a cheap preamp attached to the guitar strap. Sounded good through speakers -- like an ...

Re: Band Drama it's everywhere

Between the two of us, I am by far the bigger wise a**. No contest. I've read your band-drama stories for a long time, & the note-for-note thing always seems to be part of it, so I figured it is at least something to think about. If your remaining band mates have your back -- if you still have...

Re: Band Drama it's everywhere

Like I said I never bring up my instructor Yeah. This must have been what confused me: I remind them that the tabs I get are from a source that could run musical circles around them and that is my instructor , so when they argue about what I am playing they are really saying what he wrote is wrong ...

Re: Band Drama it's everywhere

Chris, Ever think that your insistence on getting everything just like the record, just like the tab, just like your instructor said, just like whatever, might be a pain in the rear end? Just sayin'. We've established over many months that our approaches to music are WAY different, and others here k...

Re: Obituary: Big Jim Sullivan

The obit kindly avoids the "Big Jim/Little Jim" issue... the fact that rhythm-guitar sessionist Jimmy Page claimed credit for lots of lead parts that Sullivan played. T'will be interesting to see if Pagey puts out a comment on Big Jim's passing.

Re: Do you think the blues is too white?

Chris, I feel like we -- by "we," I mean "you" -- are arguing for the sake of arguing, which seems to me a waste of time. However. Once more into the breach.... For 99% of us we have a regular genetic makeup Whatever that means.... and sure we can become good even very good guitarists but no matter ...

Re: Do you think the blues is too white?

If these genes control the synthsis of proteins that are the building blocks of life itself it's hard to beleive the information that they contain does not enter into this. Nobody is saying they DON'T "enter into this." Genes simply aren't the final word in most of what makes us human individuals. ...

Re: Do you think the blues is too white?

Every thought process, every movement, every body function happens because of chemical reactions controlled by our genes but somehow you can't imagine that this would have any influence? Where exactly did I say that? Please be specific. We can control our chemical reactions consciously, more than y...
