Re: Tone Tip From Gibson

I agree, but far more is going on than the string just getting louder. the timbre will change. Ah, but in an instantly noticeable way to most people? That's what I've been arguing against. To me, it's like the fretboard wood argument ... probably makes a difference, but can you really tell in a bli...

Re: What is a di box?

Specific to that Baggs box, it has a preamp as well, which will probably color the sound a little bit compared to running directly to the PA. It may make it sound more like an acoustic amp, or a mic'd guitar... give it a try and let us know!

Re: Tone Tip From Gibson

Gnease, your argument is still based on playing dynamics. Quotes: "fundamental-to-harmonic ratio is changing depending upon how hard the string is played." and "the effect changes with the power of the "pluck"." I didn't disagree with that. In fact, that was my point earlier in the thread: Certainly...

Re: Tone Tip From Gibson

Ok, I'll bite. low action often limits the timbre range of the instrument. HOW? I agreed with you that higher action affords greater playing dynamics, which can lead to a perception of better tone. And if one is getting clanking and buzz when playing, in my opinion the strings are too low. But the i...

Re: Tone Tip From Gibson

it may be a bit overstated and not well explained, but I agree with the basic premise that raising strings can improve timbre. a higher string can be played more dynamically than a low one. Certainly agree that higher strings can be played more dynamically, but it's the increased dynamics that can ...

Re: Passive vs. active

Here's an example I found with a nice Sadowsky preamp and a passive bass:

Is that what you're going for?

Re: Passive vs. active

could a passive bass sound like an active bass by using an external pre-amp ( First define what you mean by "sound like an active bass." Hotter output? Flatter sound? Modern/Hi-Fi? Less rolloff of highs and lows? The outboard preamp will buffer the signal to low impedance, and may or may not boost ...

Re: Eric Johnson Type Tone?

Compared to his tone in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MDw8XpZlJs&feature=related I think you sound very good, especially the reverb and delay settings, but EJ's got more presence and a more nasal, violin like tone overall. Your sound seems darker with more bottom end; might not cut thr...

Re: Guess That Riff VIII

When this song came out I thought they were mocking the Big Country bagpipe guitar sound. Seems like something Slade would do.

But yes, it's Run, Runaway.

Re: Guess That Riff VIII

This song came out a couple years later ... 1984 I believe. The riff runs under and mirrors the vocal melody.

Sum of the band's song titlez are misspelled in crazee wayz.
