Re: newbie

This forum can be a bit quiet, but the people stay on topic within a post. Patience is key. Pull your elbow all the way into your side. Try to make your fingers come straight down on the strings. Some chords, you can be a bit sloppy (the index on the D major doesn't have to come straight down). But ...

Re: How do you listen to music?

I have a Walker, Hi-Fi player for portability. Unfortunately, too many of the songs I moved over from iTunes are DMCA'd, so they won't play. Most do, but not some of my favorites. It sounds great to me. For at home, usually the BT headphones and iTunes. Sometimes, I'm listening closely. I'll listen ...

Re: Where to start with learning music theory.

I have two books on music theory I like: Music Theory for Dummies. Mal Leonard Music Theory supplement to the Hal Leonard Guitar Method book. I like them both, but the HL book, which I have on my Kindle, comes with audio for ear training. PS: Notebook, the link to look at/buy your book is dead. Do y...

Re: I can't play guitar

I started learning Black Magic Woman by Carlos Santana a couple weeks back to supplement my lessons. I'm still struggling with the D minor chord that leads into the main intro. It's getting better, but I find my pinky is too short to avoid muting the D string, so I use middle and ring finger to fret...

Re: Tuning your guitar

Since your form isn't available, I'll tell you here. I do standard tuning. I would love to have another guitar for DADGAD, but not yet there. I have two clipon tuners: an Epiphone that came in the player pack and a D'Addario I got locally. I also have a Korg metronome and tuner with contact mic. Las...

Re: #1 biggest challenge

Chord switching. Especially G to D. That's proving to be slow because of the big nature of the switch.

Re: How much music theory is required?

The chord progression is simple and consistent in rock. People like Slash are pentatonic masters, but that limits what they can do note wise. Books on music theory are not expensive. I recommend 1-2. Start with Music Theory for Dummies. Simple, easy to understand and doesn't so dumb it down as to in...

Re: Self-Taught vs Private Lessons

I taught myself for six months, but I saw that I was getting complacent.Strumming A, D and E casually, the major scales were better, but I wasn't pushing myself hard enough. So I got a teacher. Someone who will task me to do the next thing in line. Working four strum patterns using A, D, E, G, C, G7...

Metronome work and relaxing.

I'm having trouble focusing while using a metronome.

If I count it and/or tap my foot, I can make chord switches cleaner and more accurate for a longer time, but when I bring out the metronome, I feel under pressure and mess it up.

Any ideas on how to relax before my inanimate machine overlord?

Re: Line 6 Pocket POD vs. Behringer V-AMP 3

I've ruled the V-AMP 3 out after seeing a video with a person's hand on it. The thing is pretty damned big. But I might look at a VOX AC30 instead.

Line 6 Pocket POD vs. Behringer V-AMP 3

Anyone with experience with one, the other, both?

I'm looking to get one or the other so I can have something even more portable than my bedroom amp and not have to worry about yanking cables as well as something I can use for standing practice.

Do fingertips swell from guitar work?

Please humor me. This is more a medical question, but I figure someone with experience will know. My teacher gave me a list of 12 chords to practice switching between, but even before this, when I was doing A, D and E on my own, I found that as time progressed, it got more and more difficult to fing...

I've heard nothing but good things about the Epiphone LP Tribute. I want to get one, but I just plunked down for a second hand Gibson Faded T.

Re: Need help deciding on my first guitar

Wow, $1000+ for a first guitar? You must be doing pretty well for yourself. I tend to be more conservative. My first guitar, as an absolute beginner, cost $220, but it was also a package deal with an amp, picks, tuner, etc. My next was a second hand in mint condition for $550. I never spend huge amo...
