It is true that using more gain can help bring out artificial harmonics. However, if the technique isn't familiar to you, I'd suggest practicing on an acoustic first. Singing well is really about being uninhibited--it's also a very subjective thing. In other words, you are your biggest critic. Different people like to hear different things from vocalists.
