ok, I've approved the post, but this isn't Facebook; over here we expect some conversation. What gear? Why did you record this? Who wrote it? What are you looking to gain from recording this? What happens next? Most important - who are you? Tell us about your background, experience and other guitar-...

Re: greetings and learning question

But the chord F on the guitalele chart doesn't seem to look like C on guitar, I feel like I must be missing something here Yes it does; if you play a C chord on the guitar with an extra finger on the 6th string 3rd fret (giving you C/G) then you get the exact same shape as F on the guitalele chord ...

Re: Self-Taught vs Private Lessons

Self-taught, but I could already read music before I first picked up a guitar I had a few lessons in my early 20s, but my tutor "did a runner" before some heavies came round and kicked in his front door; and I had some lessons ahead of my Grade 7 exam because some things needed a little polishing. T...

Squier is Fender's low-cost range. You should be fine with one - Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro plays a Squier

Hi again. Strings aren't hitting the pickups but I DID use a lighter gauge string set than what was on it. The original strings had been on there for more than 3 years but rarely played.
Would you suggest adjusting the truss rod?

Re: Jimi Hendrix's guitar original price

What you're googling is prices NOW for '68 kit - you're looking in the vintage and rarity markets, so the prices will be high for good equipment. If you say Jimi might have paid £100 back in the day for his axe, then that might have been three weeks' average take-home pay. Call it a couple of grand ...

Re: Don't understand modes??

Thanks for your reply but I'm a noob and I'm not even sure how to play a C major scale. So I didn't really understand most of your post. OK, you're trying to run before you can walk. Head over to "Theory Without Tears" and "Scales Within Scales" in our lessons section (both by David Hodge). If you ...

You'll be surprised how quickly some things fall under the fingers - don't go for stupidly difficult stuff at first

Re: Modes?

Stay with me on this one -

In A Natural minor - yes, it's a G Natural both ways.

In A Harmonic minor, it's G# both ways.

In A Melodic minor, it's G# going up and G Natural going down - easier to sing, apparently

Re: Modes?

The out-of-key chord happens a lot. Don't forget that in the descending A melodic minor you use a G natural, not a sharp.

Re: Chord progression questions in some songs

You don't have to justify the key change. Movement from G to A or vice versa could imply you're in the key of D, or it could just sound good. The A#-C-F-G sequence could also be a sequence in Bb - or it could just sound good. Yes, you could play Gm pentatonic over G, but why not use the G Major pent...

Re: Modes?

A lot of beginners go through the "changing the position of the scale for each chord" thing, but it's important to remember that G-Em-C-D7 is a sequence in the key of G, as C-Am-F-G7 is in the key of C, so once you have the tonic Scale there is no need to specifically target chord tones at any point...

Re: Am I ready to teach guitar?

Yes. Nothing crystallises knowledge in your own mind better than teaching it to someone else. Your music reading skills will improve and your communication abilities as you try and find a 23rd different way of explaining something to someone who still doesn't get it will skyrocket. You might learn a...
