Need Help Learning a Song by Ear (This is L.A. - The Briggs)

I'm trying to pick up a basic punk song by ear and I'm stumped. Thought someone here might help me get unstuck. The song is "This is LA" by the Briggs. I've been able to figure out (I think) that the song is in A flat major, which was very helpful in picking out the individual notes. Where I'm stump...

Re: 7-Year Old Son Starting Lessons Today!!

Blue Jay, s1120, and TRGuitar, Thank you!! This forum did a lot to encourage my interest in picking up the guitar again after many years, and I'm very happy to see the progress my son has made and being able to share it with all of you.

Re: What do you all think about the Gibson raids?

The book "Go Directly to Jail: The Criminalization of Almost Everything" includes the prime example of horrific abuses by the Feds using the Lacey Act. Honest businessman and lobster importer David McNab was sentenced to and is currently serving 8 years in Federal prison for importing lobsters in pl...

Re: What do you all think about the Gibson raids?

Good write-up on this in the Journal yesterday: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204443404577054370383139472.html#articleTabs%3Darticle On a sweltering day in August, federal agents raided the Tennessee factories of the storied Gibson Guitar Corp. The suggestion was that Gibson had viol...

Re: What do you all think about the Gibson raids?

Oh my God these are strange times we live in. Armed federal agents raiding a guitar company over technicalities regarding it's wood. The Department of Education actually has it's own swat teams if you can believe it (http://reason.com/blog/2011/06/08/dept-of-education-swat-team-up). EIA head Andrea ...

Re: 7-Year Old Son Starting Lessons Today!!

Congratulations! If he's learning the note on the first string, for instance, you can play a rhythm of C, F and G chords and let him do some "soloing" with just the notes he's learned. It's a great way to develop phrasing and a feel for the music. Once he learns more notes and possibly the melodies...

7-Year Old Son Starting Lessons Today!!

Any suggestions from the teachers on this site? Today we pick up his small sized classical guitar rental and footrest, then meet for his half-hour lesson. The instructor wants me to attend his lessons so I can help him with his practice at home, which I'm very happy to do. I'd be very interested in ...

Re: Hi Y'all...

Good news, Ande. Keep at it day by day.

Nothing better you can do than break all of those routines, and play the guitar. Got to keep those fingers busy.

Re: iTunes killing music industry?

Also competition from other forms of entertainment is killing the industry (and by that I mean record companies, not artists). When I was my son's age (grade school), we all wanted to buy records from our favorite bands (KISS was big at the time). Neither my son nor his friends have any interest in ...

Re: G Chord Voicing

I tend to mute the A string whether I want to or not, so it's good to know I'm not muddying my low 3rd! Thanks Vic and Rob - very enlightening.

G Chord Voicing

Usually I see G written out as 320003. Occasionally I see 3X0003. Other times I see 320033. The first alternate mutes the 3rd that shows up on the A string, the second replaces the 3rd on the B string with the 5th. Is it desirable not to have the 3rd show up twice in one chord, or are these alternat...

Re: I Shot The Sheriff

Towards the end of the song there's a section inserted between the last two repeats of the chorus that goes:

Gm, Cm, Gm, twice, followed by Eb, Dm, Gm.

Any suggestions for voicings for those chords?

Re: Connecting guitar directly to PC

I'm in the same boat. I tried plugging my electric guitar directly into the line-in on my MacBook (using a 1/4 to 1/8 in. converter), and it doesn't pick up sound, I suppose because it needs some amplification. I plug into my amp and then plug the amp output into the computer and that works. The pro...
