Re: Strumming With a Pick

Caltone, you are not alone. I too have trouble using a pick. I've tried and tried and tried to use a pick but after about one minute I loose patience, chuck the stupid thing over my shoulder (when I don't drop it in the sound hole) and carry on with the thumb. I find bass strum style the most annoyi...

Re: I'm brand new to this and need some guidance.

...Does anyone know of a free tutorial site or good site that can teach me what chords really are and how to play them? ... You are looking at one .... :) I started using this site some months ago as a "false beginner" (meaning I knew a couple of things but not much). Back then, there were excellen...

Re: Affect of temperature on guitar strings

I just replaced all 6 strings on one of the guitars.... ONG what a mess !!! I watched videos on how to do this before trying. The presenters make it look so easy and the strings are always neatly wrapped around the pegs. Not so when I try it (total mess) Maybe I'll do better with the next guitar.

Re: Beginner's videos

I can't believe I never saw this thread before. It's amazing ! One day I'll work up the courage to post a video (don't hold your breath though). I'll admit that I haven't read all 68 pages of this discussion (I read the first 20 then took a huge jump) so forgive me if this has already been said: I h...

Re: Affect of temperature on guitar strings

I would not expect such a radical change in string tensile strength due to elevated, yet 'livable' temps. what are you using for a tuning reference? are you positive your E is really E? The first guitar is an electric-accoustic with built-in tuner, for the second (and the classical) I use an electr...

Affect of temperature on guitar strings

Hi, We're going through a hot spell at the moment (temperatures of 35°C and about 60% humidity). I wanted to play some tunes so I picked up my guitar and started tuning it up. I got through the 5 thickest strings without any problem but when I tried to tune up the high E.... twang !!! The string sn...

Re: What do you do to warm up?

I came across a warm-up exercise from classical guitar; i think it was called the "catarpillar" due to the movement of the fingers. I'll try to explain: In the exercise, you have to place all four fingers on the fretboard (playing each note individually) before moving on. The exercise is played on o...

Book of Childrens songs with TAB

Hello all, I became a father for the first time 7 months ago. I want to learn some childrens songs on the guitar so that I can have a sing-along with my son (when he's old enough). Does anybody know of a book of childrens songs with TAB ? (preferably with a CD so I can hear what the song is supposed...

Re: Podcast Notes

David, I have a quick question about podcast 5. When doing the walking bass line on the G scale, there is something I haven't understood... You say that the first few notes on the G scale are : |----------------- |----------------- |----------------- |------------------ |--- 0---2---4---- |-3-------...

Re: songbook with strumming patterns

While looking to feed my new addiction with information at Borders yesterday, I stumbled across "The Complete Guitar Player" by Russ Shipton. It's a 3 part course that I got in a single book and it includes strumming patterns for all of the songs used to teach. I got it since it includes some popul...

Re: Podcast Notes

I got the notes. Thank you.

Also, special thanks to the person who originally wrote these notes. It was a fantastic idea and must have taken ages to do. The notes are really well presented and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing.

Re: songbook with strumming patterns

This question seems to get asked again and again and again....always seems to disolve into "Just pick them out yourself..." Note to educators! How about a book/pdf of say ten, well known tunes with a strumming patterns? Tutors, usually good guitar players find this stuff easy to play....us beginner...
