RIP Steinar Gregertsen

I am sad to pass on the news that Steinar Gregertsen, a friend, member of this board, fantastic musician (mainly a lap steel player) and all-around good guy, has passed away today. RIP, Steinar!

Re: Best steel to use for Lap steel???

Something that was very popular for steel guitars in the '30s and '40s and still works just fine is a piston wrist pin or gudgeon pin as our UK friends call it. They come in about any size you might want. You'll have to keep it clean and wipe it down with an oily cloth to keep it from rusting.

Re: Lap Steel Strings

Here are the actual tunings and string gauges used by Don Helms, who played steel guitar for Hank Williams: http://www.scribd.com/doc/16618979/Steel-Guitar-Tuning-of-Don-Helms Most people now use a C6 tuning to play old country music and Western swing on a lap steel, on a 6 string that's CEGACE from...

Re: New slides....

I've made a few copper pipe slides, but thought they were a bit on the scratchy side. Different textures are good for different things, though. Sometimes I prefer my sublimely smooth Diamond Ultimate lead crystal slide, but if I really want to get sustain from vibrato on the strings I've got to have...

Re: My First Resonator

Hey, Roy! I hope you're having fun with that thing! I've been playing with a toy I got from Rondo about 4 years ago, an SX Lap-1 lap steel. Just put a lipstick pickup in it, which doesn't sound a lot different but looks cool. :D

Re: Wrist and Thumb pain !

Oddly enough (or not so odd) fish oil caps actually make a noticeable difference...especially to my breath. But...whaddya 'spect from a cat??? Cat This is exactly why I take fish oil. Helps my creaky left thumb (which probably owes more to the hard clutch squeeze on my old Panhead Harley tha...

Re: Acoustic or Electric...

Mostly depends on what kind of music you like to play. If you really like electric styles, play electric. And vice versa. You can of course do both.

Re: Leaving Capo on

I think it might leave a mark on the neck finish of some guitars. For that matter, the plastic or rubber covers of guitar stands can mar nitrocellulose lacquer finishes.
