Re: Buying a New Guitar

Check out the G&L. They are the best "Fender" clones around. Especially since the company was founded by Leo Fender. Some argue that they are even better than Fenders. http://glguitars.com/

Re: Tube Amps - Scheduled Maintenance?

I've never done anything to my fender princeton reverb II amp. It's probably 30 years old and buzzes like a chain saw. Perhaps it's time to take it in.....

Re: Why are you a guitarist

as a kid, my friends and I would put on "we will rock you" by queen and be a band. We had two tennis rackets and a plastic garbage pail that we turned upside down. We were the band. I love music in all forms and always wanted to have that rock star lifestyle. I've had my fair share of playing in bar...

Re: Your Gear...

Heritage H575 custom Gibson LP 1957 goldtop reissue with Brazilian rosewood Fender stratocaster, (1982 I think) Gibson CL deluxe Acoustic G&L climax bass probably a few others that I can't recall at the moment as some are in storage. Run all that through a peavey mark IV bass head and a Fender Princ...

Re: Changing gauges- 13s to 10s. Possible?

I used to go with the lighter gauge strings and now I can't understand why. I love those thicker strings. I guess it's all preference. Just check the neck to see that it's not bending away from the strings at the nut. You may have to adjust the truss rod then. Just do 1/4 turn and see how that goes ...

Re: Learn to play jazz without a teacher?

Could it be done without the help and guidance of a teacher? Are there enough good books for self-taught I like the National Guitar Workshop book by Jody Fisher Beginning Jazz Guitar . I think it's a well laid out progression (there are 3 more books after this - Intermediate, Advanced - Chord/Melod...

Re: can phrasing be taught??

I think it all goes to "feel". Garcia was very good at picking apart chords for solos that just fit right. Knowing how to play fast and all that is good, but if it doesn't fit within the context of the song, then it will be forgotten. sometimes the spaces in between the notes are just as important a...

Re: Rosewood or Maple fretboards,is there a sound difference?

I like the feel of an ebony board better. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's harder than rosewood or maple. It could just be the guitar I have with the ebony. Although I've played some classical guitars with ebony boards and tended to prefer them.

Re: MOTU Problems

I have a motu ultralite and run it to my mac via firewire. My monitors are krk rockit 5's coming directly from the ultralite. I don't have feedback of any sort. Are you running your speakers through your pc or directly from the ultralite? Are you volume settings on the pc all the way up? Maybe this ...

zappa plays zappa

Over the weekend I saw the Zappa Plays Zappa concert in chicago at the civic opera house. What a great concert that was. Dweezil Zappa had a full band and played all of Frank's music. He jammed for 3 hours straight. There were about 3 songs where they had video of Frank playing lead and singing whil...

I'll second the motu. I have the ultralite and it's great. Just connect via firewire and you can take it and plug it in anywhere. The sound is great.
