I was so lucky to run into this guy travelling around Europe to film musicians. He had lots of gear with wireless mics, speaker for playback etc. Took us maybe 40 minutes and then the mixing. Can happen in various ways. Often I just wait... I put the lyrics in the back of my brain and carry them around - then I hum some now and then, think of the lyrics and put it back. After some days or weeks or month, sometimes it clicks. There was the melody. Another thing I like doing is having more...

What they said. BUT - learning songs by ear is terrific practice. I would encourage you to keep doing that - at least until you get stuck. Then go see what Internet has to say about it.
